Stress Management and You

Staying stress-free is essential to keep your mind, body, and spirit healthy.

In today’s world, many things are happening around us that can bring on stress and anxiety. Loss of a loved one, job loss, future uncertainties, health conditions, and so on. as we all know, stress can bring on depression, and depression can be harmful to the mind, body, and spirit. Therefore, reducing stress and managing it can change your life inwardly and outwardly.

We have gone through more than a year of lockdowns due to COVID-19, and there has been a significant disruption of life. In an attempt to contain the virus spread, lockdowns have confined us in our houses and taught us a new way of life. We have worn masks whenever we get a chance to move out, and eventually, this outrageous pandemic has redefined the normal socialization limits.

After wearing masks, isolating, and eventually getting jobs, life is slowly returning to normal, and soon, everything will open. But coping with going back to everyday life is a hard nut to crack. This has given rise to Fear of Normal (FONO). Due to mask-wearing, many have lost their confidence, self-esteem, and happiness, and regaining any of these is not easy.

All this fear of normal (FONO) and an attempt to adopt normalcy has culminated in different types of stress that you must know how to manage before anything else.

Manifestations of Stress

While some people will know when stressed, some tend to assume they are not. Denying that they are stressed is one way of giving the stress leeway to cause something more serious like depression and suicidal thoughts.

  • Emotional manifestation: This includes feelings of anxiety, grief, loneliness, fear, irritability, and unexplainable sadness

  • Thoughts manifestation:
This includes persistent worry, being overwhelmed, rumination (negative thoughts), and racing thoughts that cut short your happy moments.
  • Physical manifestation: Unexplainable fatigue, tearfulness, lack of sleep and tension all the time, increased heartbeat, and an upset stomach.

Coping with and Managing Stress

The first thing to manage stress is accepting that it is there. Since we have seen the manifestation of stress and agreed that there is a great fear of normal (FONO) with the re-opening after COVID-19, we can therefore proceed to explore several ways of coping and managing stress.

Pay attention to your feelings.

Some level of stress is normal and healthy for you. But if you experience excessive stress that makes you develop fear, denies you happiness, and activates bad feelings, it is time to pay special attention to such stress. The first thing should be identifying the cause of the stress.

Define that feeling and start working towards a solution. Paying attention to your feelings makes you identify the cause of your stress. After that, you could pause a little bit, process the whole thing, and get a moment to recollect yourself. Eventually, you will know how to act and get set on what will likely come.

Be candid about your choices

After knowing clearly that an outing is giving you stress, you should learn to be candid with your friends and let them know what works for you and what does not. This will see you avoid any situations that trigger stress.

Exercising routine

Doing exercises has been scientifically proven to reduce stress. Whenever you exercise, your body produces some chemicals called endorphins. Endorphins are feel-good substances that make you happy. This implies that when you are stressed, you can do some exercises, which significantly help mitigate the stress hormone levels.

Get enough sleep

Usually, an adult is supposed to sleep for at least 7-8 hours. If you get insufficient sleep, your body will react. The body acts in distress, and this activates the production of the stress hormone – cortisol. This hormone is responsible for fight-or-flight reactions and majorly affects your heart rate.

Other helpful ways of managing stress after the COVID-19 pandemic include:

  • Spending time in nature
  • Watching what you eat and drink
  • Grounding yourself

However, it is always advisable to seek support if none of the above stress mitigation measures work for you.
